Thomas V. Smallman, M.D., Joins Auburn Orthopaedic Specialists: Now Accepting New Patients
Thomas Victor Smallman, M.D., has joined Auburn Orthopaedic Specialists, part of Auburn Memorial Medical Services, PC. He has also become a member of the Auburn Memorial Hospital Medical Staff.
Smallman is Canadian Board Certified in Orthopaedics. He earned his medical degree at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He completed a Residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. In 1980 he won the Harold Micay Award as Outstanding Surgical Resident; in 1981 he received the James Award as Senior Resident Orthopaedics for Proficiency in Orthopaedics; and in 1982 he won the David Geck Award as Outstanding Senior Surgical Resident.
Prior to joining Auburn Orthopaedic Specialists, he was affiliated with the Orthopaedic Department and an Assistant Professor at Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1975 through 1993, including serving (1990-91) as Commanding Officer of the Canadian National Medical Augmentation Team, a Canadian team of 13 medical professionals deployed to the Gulf aboard the USNS Mercy, a 1,000 bed US Navy hospital ship. He received a Certificate of Commendation from the U.S. Navy in 1992 for outstanding service and leadership.
He received the Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA) Presidential Award of Excellence at the June 2000 Annual Meeting of the COA for outstanding contributions to orthopaedic surgery.
