Angela Winfield to Address Auburn Memorial Hospital Women's Health InstituteEach October, approximately 200 women gather together at the Auburn Holiday Inn to enhance their skills as healthcare guardians for their families, as well as for themselves. This year, the 13th annual AMH Women’s Health Institute will be held on Saturday, October 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will open with a keynote address by Angela Winfield, an attorney who has achieved remarkable success despite losing her vision at an early age. Her address is entitled: “My Perception of My Diagnosis Matters: Maintaining a Healthy Spirit Through It All.”

Winfield was born and raised in Newburgh, NY. When she was 4, she was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, cataracts and glaucoma and uveitis. She underwent numerous eye surgeries, but was declared legally blind at age 10. Throughout the rest of her education, her vision deteriorated, but she persevered. She excelled in her studies, winning honors in advanced placement classes. She was inducted into the National Honors Society and the National Foreign Language Honors Society.

She attended Barnard College of Columbia University in NYC. During her sophomore year, she suffered a flair-up of her uveitis and permanently lost all her vision. But she was more than ever impelled to succeed, and continued her studies at Barnard. She also studied in London at Queen Mary College for a semester. She earned her Bachelor’s degree with a combined major in Political Science and Human Rights and a minor in Religion.

She then attended Cornell Law School, where she participated in moot court competitions and placed as a quarter finalist and semi finalist. She served as a law intern at Cornell Legal Aide, where she represented clients in employment, social security and criminal matters. She also clerked for an acting NY Supreme Court judge. She graduated from Cornell with a Juris Doctorate and a concentration in advocacy.

She is an attorney with the top 250 law firm of Hiscock & Barclay, LLP, where she focuses on commercial litigation and torts and products liability defense. She is a member of the NY Bar Association and the American Bar Association and serves on the boards of Cayuga/Seneca Community Action Agency and Aurora of Central NY. Her story has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and many other publications.

In addition to practicing law, she is an acclaimed public speaker. She lives in Auburn.

Women are encouraged to sign up for the Institute as soon as possible, as it usually sells out. Call 255-7444 for information or to register.

The AMH Women’s Health Institute, known as “Our Mothers, Our Daughters, Our Health,” is an educational program for women, including breakfast and lunch, for only $15/person. The day opens at 8:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast during registration, the keynote address from 9 to 9:45 a.m., followed by a choice of any three workshops (45 minutes each) from a wide selection of topics related to women’s health and well being, and ending with a luncheon and a short Q&A period with all the workshop presenters.
